FAQ

What is electroforming?

Electroforming is the intricate process of fusing metal onto another medium using a low voltage electrical charge. The process involves sealing the object to protect it from the electrolytic bath and applying conductive paint where the copper growth is desired. The piece is then suspended in an electrolytic solution comprised of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid. The electrical charge breaks down a positively charged copper anode and deposits it onto the piece, which is suspended from the negatively charged cathode. A layer of copper slowly forms over the piece. After many hours of moving copper ions onto the piece, it is removed from the bath and goes on to the polish, patina, and sealing processes. The piece is then ready to become jewelry! The metal is hardy and durable, while the original material remains encased in the copper.

Will copper turn my skin green?

Some people have a reaction to copper which causes temporary greening of the skin. This is a completely harmless reaction affected by your body's ph. It is most common with rings and happens more often while sweating or if you don't remove the ring to wash your hands/shower/swim. If greening bothers you, the simplest solution is to apply a layer of clear nail polish on the inside of your ring band.

Does copper have therapeutic/healing properties?

I cannot make claims towards medical benefits of wearing copper, however many believe there are metaphysical and spiritual properties associated with this metal. Copper is a conductor, so it is also considered an amplifier for the metaphysical power of crystals. I encourage looking into this yourself if you are interested in the healing benefits of crystals, gems, minerals, and metals!

How do I clean copper jewelry?

For a quick clean of jewelry, I recommend a small dab of gentle soap and a light scrub with a toothbrush. It's important to dry your jewelry right away. To remove tarnish on unsealed raw copper, soak it in plain vinegar in 5-minute increments then rinse with gentle soap and water and dry right away.

I do not seal rings for the purpose of easier cleaning. (Sealants wear off faster on rings and make it harder to remove tarnish evenly) Jewelry polishing cloths are also helpful for unsealed pieces; I recommend the Sunshine polishing cloth brand. Be sure to check crystal types with the brand of cloth you use. Some soft stones such as malachite and moonstone are not recommended with polishing cloths due to anti tarnish compounds in the cloths. If you use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner or any other commercial products, be sure to check safety of the cleaning product with stones in your jewelry.
